The Troubleshooting Process

HP Desktop Computer Repair: The PC boots up and displays a frozen HP logo, but does not proceed beyond this point. The first step is to determine if the issue is software or hardware related, since many software issues can arise from a failing hard drive, we check the health of the drive first. We extract the hard drive from the PC and connect it to our test computer that contains specialized software, which enables us to read the health or S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) status of the drive. This hard drive turned out to be healthy with no S.M.A.R.T warnings or errors.

We then move onto BIOS to verify settings. When we attempt to gain access to the BIOS, the system boots directly onto the HP logo screen and freezes, even with no hard drive connected (all signs pointing to a hardware issue). After a few more failed attempts to enter BIOS, we took the motherboard out for a visual inspection, which did not reveal anything out of the ordinary, such as blown capacitors, burnt components or liquid damage (yes, we’ve seen liquid damage on desktops before!). After a few other checks were performed our diagnostics revealed that the computer had a faulty motherboard that needed to be replaced.
